“Last Light” –10x20 Oil  It’s been too hot to paint on location – even early in the morning, the temperature is in the high 80’s so 3 days ago, I went through my sketchbooks looking for inspiration. Today was overcast and much cooler! Another artist and I painted hay bales this afternoon.  This is a farm located within the city limits on the edge of a historical residential district on West Jefferson street.  I’m not sure how many acres, but it has to be at least a hundred. The majestic oak & pecan trees in the midst of  mowed grass  & baled hay was irresistible…I had to paint it. “HAY!!!”

Last Monday, in spite of the 30 mph winds, and intermittent sunshine,  I painted out west of town on FM 1446.  Wildflowers were resplendent in gold & yellow.  I saw the flowers first, then the dirt road leading up to a farmer’s metal gate. This was the last day to paint; submission deadline 4pm!  Arriving in Terrell about 9am, I drove straight to a location “scouted” earlier in the week – the First Methodist Church. I posted "Sunday Drive" a couple of days ago and the more I looked at it, the less I liked the composition. Today, I went back to Lahaina town....there are so many paintings just waiting to happen! This is a little park behind the library that's on the seawall. Last weekend was spent doing my favorite activity...painting en plein air! Corsicana is about 40 miles south of Waxahachie so it was an easy day trip to participate in this fun, fun event. What made it even more fun is winning the 1st place award. About 20 really good painters competed in the 2-day event. Another great day on the pier in Fulton Harbor! It was very windy yesterday; wind gusts at 35 mph...my paint was literally drying in the brush before I could apply it to the paper! TAOS STEPS  12" x 16" Egg TemperaI've been working on this painting, off and on, (mostly off) for about 6 years.  The medium is Egg Tempera; a mixture of dry pigment, water, and egg yolk. Last summer, I purchased several tubes of "open" acrylic paints. The term "open" meaning that they don't "set up" or "skin" over as fast, giving the artist more painting time.  I'm used to quick drying paint....nothing dries any quicker than watercolor :-) . Kocian's Red TractorA few weeks ago, I spent the day painting at James & Melinda Kocian's country estate. My subject that day was the red tractor parked in front of their implement barn.  The day was pretty windy and I had one hand on my shade umbrella and my body braced against my easel. With the temperature getting up to a "balmy" 62 degrees, I painted out today with four other artists. The 5 of us scattered out on about 4 acres of trees, a pond, little paths, & some outbuildings. Technology...don'cha love it? The new surfaces available for watercolor begs for experimentation and takes me out of my "comfort zone". I'm basically a "traditional" watercolor painter...my mantra is "wetter is better". I rarely use mask, saving the whites and following the "rules". Watercolor canvas requires a different approach...less water,(wetter ISN'T better), more paint, softer touch.

The title adds a little mystery...you're drawn into the painting by the 3 small figures in the distance; two are talking and the other has walked away... This is a watercolor, 16 x 20. I completed this painting 2 days before Christmas.

I'm delighted to announce that my painting, AWESOME AUTUMN won First Place in DeSoto Art League's annual membership show. There were 44 entries and 4 "over-all" awards; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and honorable mention. Winning is a good "motivator"....back to work I go!

RIVER BEND RANCH - Watercolor - 8"x10"Today I spent about 3 hours cleaning up my work area; emptying the trash and sweeping up little bits of debris that is always under my drawing board. I only had a couple of hours before dinner so I decided to do a small landscape. This is the 3rd in a series of "River Bend" paintings.

"AWESOME AUTUMN" WATERCOLOR - 20" X 24"I think this painting has been "mentally" in process for about 5 years. I started with a quick pencil sketch, working out the composition. Then about a year ago,I worked up several "seasonal" color sketches then put them aside until I discovered the sketches this past week in one of my resource files.

This 9" x 6" watercolor is inspired by the dozen or so Cardinal pairs that live in my back yard among the Pecan trees and shrubs. I love trees, especially in the fall and winter. The obvious focus in this painting is the tree trunk contrasting with the orange background, but a closer look reveals the spot of red up high in the tree top!

Well, it was a good trip to Corsicana the past 2 days and a successful paint out. I won 1st Place with my painting of "Palace Playbill". "Olsen Feed Store" and "Palace" are 11" x 14", watercolor. Both paintings will be on display (and for sale)at the Corsicana, Texas Chamber of Commerce for 2 weeks. Enjoy!

Today, I traveled south about 45 miles to Corsicana, Texas to participate in a 2-day paint out. After checking in, I drove around the historic downtown area and came upon an old feed store. The sunlight was filtered by a haze so I opted to get my drawing in place and return tomorrow, hoping for better light conditions.
