Nothing ever stays the same....except for a moment in time captured by a plein air artist. I painted Saturday Market during the farmer's market 2 years ago. In the background is a "pocket park" (trees within) &amp; left of that (the green building) is the 1879 Chisolm Grill. There’s an old historic house on First Street that I attempted to paint this morning – it just wouldn’t come together for me .  I decided to pack up and look for another location. A few days ago I posted my watercolor titled "A Wintery Day".  This is a 7x14 oil on canvas using that watercolor painting as reference. I changed up the foreground, mainly because I couldn't get the color of snow I wanted...so after scraping the foreground off several times, I ended up painting rocks with patches of snow.

Actually, today was the better day for light; something yellow on the deck that I couldn't see was "bouncing" onto the front of the cabin and also on the back. Colors were vibrant and the water in the harbor was beautiful. It was very windy yesterday; wind gusts at 35 mph...my paint was literally drying in the brush before I could apply it to the paper! The term "open" meaning that they don't "set up" or "skin" over as fast, giving the artist more painting time.  I'm used to quick drying paint....nothing dries any quicker than watercolor :-) . The new surfaces available for watercolor begs for experimentation and takes me out of my "comfort zone".  I'm basically a "traditional" watercolor painter...my mantra is "wetter is better". I rarely use mask, saving the whites and following the "rules". I love trees, especially in the fall and winter. After checking in, I drove around the historic downtown area and came upon an old feed store.  The sunlight was filtered by a haze so I opted to get my drawing in place and return tomorrow, hoping for better light conditions.
